5 Mindset Shifts to Simplify Healthy Living

Let me first give you a reality check. We all are so busy making a living that our busy lifestyle impacts our health in ways that we often don’t realize. This in turn affects every aspect of our life. I am writing this to tell you that no matter how busy your schedule looks and how hectic your days are, there is always one thing you can do to live a healthy life. All it takes is a tiny shift in the mindset. One choice per day.

First, let me clarify- what makes good health?

The foundation of good health is your body, mind and spirit. When all three are well cared for then healthy living becomes easier.

1. Exercise Frequently

If you look at exercise as something that you do to lose or gain weight then you will only do it when it is absolutely necessary. But, exercise is something that you do to maintain a healthy life. Exercising only for 20 minutes a day can keep you all energized for the day. You do not have to go to the gym and lift heavy weights all the time. Exercise needs to be fun. There are a lot of things you could do at home even without any type of equipment. The most important thing is you need to do it consistently. It is perfectly ok to miss a day or two but you need to make sure you get back to it as soon as possible.

Yes, sometimes I also miss a few days of my exercise because of some reasons but I make sure that the next day I’m going to compensate with some HIIT or some long yoga sessions.

Exercise for everybody can be different. If you do not like running then you can do dancing, Zumba, yoga, karate or kickboxing. Whatever you choose, the only thing that you need to make sure is that you are having fun exercising.

20 minutes of exercise will give you enough endorphins to keep you fresh for the day.

What works best for me is my morning runs and yoga practice . I have recently completed a 100 KM run challenge with 2 of my friends.

2. Eat healthy, focus on ingredients more than the calories

A can of coke has about 150 calories which are similar to having a handful of almonds. So, stop counting calories. Your body does not demand only calories. It needs food that makes you feel satiated and has a good amount of nutritional value. Almonds contain rich fiber, protein and healthy fats which will make you feel full. But what does a coke contain? Well, only a huge amount of sugar and carbon dioxide which not only have 0 nutritional value but will also result in increased bloating.

Quick tip: Look for the ingredients on the label. If you are not sure of all ingredients that are there in a particular product, you probably should just skip it.

I have seen many of my friends opting for fat-free or low-calorie versions of their favorite food. They think it is healthy. But most of these food items contain additives to make up for the missing sugar or fat which are not healthy.

The best thing is to stick to the basic ingredients and organic food (if possible).

3. Healthy comes in a lot of variety

There are so many recipes that are tagged healthy but always remember if something is healthy for someone, doesn’t make it healthy for you.

Quick Tip: Food needs to make you feel full and energetic. If certain food items make you feel crappy and sleepy then that is not a healthy food for you.

It is very important to know what is healthy for you and what works for you. Sometimes you will have to do some trial and error but you eventually will know what is best for you.

4. Healthy does not mean expensive

Few of my friends always complain that healthy food is expensive and they make this excuse to cover their lack of interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The best way to lead a healthy life is to cook at home more often. You may also cook an organic meal every now and then.

It is ok if you have a couple of meals in a week at a restaurant or at an office party but make sure you burn out those calories with high-intensity exercise or running and get back to home-cooked food as soon as possible.

Quick Tip: Fasting once in 15 days is the best way to cleanse your body. It is scientifically proven that fasting indeed benefits your body a lot.

5. A healthy lifestyle means happy you

Once you adopt a healthy lifestyle, you will feel the difference in your well-being in a month’s time. Healthy people also have better relationships with people around them and they spread joy everywhere they go.

Breaking out of the comfort zone of your old habits will not be easy at first but hey, you will only see the results outside of that zone. So, do not wait for the next Monday or the 1st of the month. Start Today. All it takes is a little determination.

What action are you going to take today? Tell us in comments what works for you the best and how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

A challenge for you:

Pick 3 healthy things that you will do for the next 30 days and stick it up on your desk. It can be as simple as 10 minutes of stretching every day or eating healthy food.

Once you get the feel of it I am sure you would continue this for a long time.

Always remember- Your health is your responsibility, so, make time for it, not excuses! You are the only one that you have for yourself:)

These simple and mindful tips have helped me a lot and I am sure it will be of great help to you:)
