Tex Winter didn’t speak Friday evening when he was inducted in to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Winter, 89, suffered a stroke in April 2009.
So his son, Chris Winter, spoke on behalf of his father, who stood following to him on stage.
Chris Winter’s heartfelt and rambling speech touched upon considerably of his dad’s profession, like Winter’s very first head coaching task at Marquette University.
Chris Winter advised his father was “25 or possibly 24” when he became MU’s coach in 1951, succeeding Bill Chandler.
“He was the youngest head coach ever appointed in Division I and I assume that record could nonetheless hold,” Chris Winter stated, which won a round of applause from the audience on the ceremony.
“I haven’t truly checked that out,” Chris Winter stated, laughing nervously.
Very well, we did slightly checking, and here’s what we located.
When Winter accepted the head coaching task at MU on April 11, 1951, he was 29. Winter was born on Feb. 25, 1922.
At that time, Winter may well have already been the youngest head coach to become hired for any Division I basketball system. And also nowadays, 29 is awfully young for any Division I coach.
But we located no less than a single other coach who was younger than 29 when he was hired for any Division I task.
Dane Fife, now an assistant at Michigan State, was 25 when he was hired to coach Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 2005. IPFW continues to be a Division I system because the 2001-’02 season.
By contrast, Brad Stevens was 30 when he was hired by Butler in 2007. Brian Wardle was 30 when he was hired by UW-Green Bay in 2010.
Winter played briefly for Marquette inside the winter of 1943-’44 when Chandler was the coach. At that time Winter was a part of the navy air corps, assigned for the V-5 cadet plan. He played 4 games at guard, which includes a victory against Wisconsin. He won varsity letter.
Winter was not amongst the far more than 40 candidates who applied to do well Chandler, who resigned on March 17, 1951. MU initially needed Winter as an assistant in 1950, but couldn’t offer you him adequate of a salary to leave Kansas State, exactly where he was an assistant for Jack Gardner.
Marquette’s athletic director, Conrad Jennings, wrote to Winter in Manhattan, Kansas, asking him if he was considering the head coaching task. He was 1 of about a dozen candidates interviewed by MU.
A series of long-distance telephone calls sealed the deal.
Winter was an aggressive recruiter, which was not the practice of no less than some coaches in the time, like Bud Foster, who was at Wisconsin.
In his very first season, in accordance with a report, Winter landed all the leading substantial school players within the Wisconsin except 1, Dick Cable of Stevens Point. One particular of these recruits, Rube Schulz of Watertown, was at UW for orientation week when he altered his thoughts and determined to attend MU.
Schulz’s departure from UW so irritated Foster that Wisconsin dropped Marquette from its schedule once the contract ran out in 1953-’54. It had been not till 1958-’59, when John Erickson had followed Foster, that the rivalry was resumed.
Winter’s MU teams have been 12-14 his very first year and 13-11 his second.
Later in his profession, Winter coached at Prolonged Beach State, in which a single of his assistants was former UW-Milwaukee coach Bob Gottlieb. When Winter left Prolonged Beach, he was succeeded by Dave Buss, the former UWGB coach.
