Home Workout Equipment

For a growing number of people, working out at home is a great alternative to traveling to the local gym. At home, there is no need to worry about people sweating and coughing all over the equipment, no trying to get to the gym when it’s raining, etc. It’s just you in the privacy of your own home.

Modern home gym equipment has recently become so sophisticated and durable that you won’t have to forgo quality. By working out at home, you can get all of the pluses and none of the minuses. Let’s look at a few pieces of equipment you might find yourself wanting.

Heart Rate Monitor

This can be used in conjunction with almost any of your other equipment to monitor your heart rate in real time. Monitors normally have two parts: a chest strap and a wristwatch display. These provide instant feedback. This way, you won’t have to guess if you’re working out hard enough for good cardio work.

Dumbbells

Aerobic exercise is good, but it’s only one ingredient in a successful weight loss program. Resistance training will help tone your body and increase your metabolism – even hours later when you are resting. Adjustable dumbbells allows you to switch exercises efficiently.

Elliptical Trainer

The elliptical trainer combines lower and upper body workouts into one effective workout. These low-impact devices are easy on knees – even more so than treadmills. Choose one with a stride mechanism that feels natural to you.

Pull up Bar

If you want a good biceps and back workout, you will definitely want a pull up bar. Of course, we are partial to the ceiling mounted type since these are generally the most sturdy ones you can buy. On the other hand, if cost is an issue or you need a temporary solution, you will probably need to look at door frame bars. These are the type most commonly used today. There are a variety of types available, with a wide range of prices.

Door Frame Bars

Another popular variety is the kind of bar that can be place in your door frame. This kind of bar will most likely be the cheapest and it doesn’t require any kind of installation. However, as you can imagine, these bars are typically un-sturdy and can be unsafe depending on your weight and how you use it.

These are perfect for apartment dwellers or people who live in rather small spaces. You can simply place it in any door frame, use it and then put it back in the closet when done. They are simple and decent for doing exercises but are not recommended if you intend to do pull ups often. If you will only use it once a week or less, it’s probably a good option for you.

You could always attempt to build your own bar but I wouldn’t recommend that. There really is no need for that since the prices are low nowadays for top quality solutions. Just determine how much you intend on actually using it and then use the guidelines above to make the best choice.
