Safety Requisites for Civil Engineering Jobs

North Carolina is slowly but gradually back on track in bringing its unemployment level to below 7 percent state-wide. As per the recent N.C. State University’s study, it is expected to bring the rate below 6 percent in the Triangle by the year 2015. The economic recovery is expected to continue as the opportunities for jobs in North Carolina are on a rise.

The construction sector deserves a special mention at this juncture that added over 7000 jobs in May 2013. Civil Engineering jobs in North Carolina have thus increased by leaps and bounds owing to accelerated growth in this sector

Civil Engineering jobs are concerned with the care and development of the natural and manmade environments and cater to planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of various infrastructure projects.

They can be split into the following sub-branches:

  • Structural Engineering: It has got to do with buildings, bridges, stadiums, etc
  • Transportation Engineering: It Involves highways, airports, transit systems, etc

In North Carolina, although majority of the work is desk based, civil engineers are often required on site to supervise the projects.   • While working on site, engineers need to ensure their own safety by wearing the correct PPE (personal protective equipment) like a helmet or a dust mask.
  • If the worker is new, inexperienced or not adequately trained, he must be supervised very closely. A buddy system may be recommended in this case.
  • If a civil engineer notices bad working practices, the concerned worker should immediately be made aware that what he is doing is flawed and the probable repercussions of the same.
  • The project implementation should be as per the plan and drawings or else the entire construction may go haywire, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • The civil engineer should try not to interfere with any kind of machineries or equipments as there will be specialists to deal with them. However, if he notices any fault in them, he may always report it.
