The New Honda Accord Revealed in Detroit

The new Honda Accord will be the 10th generation model, and it has certainly not rested on its laurels. The 2018 Honda Accord was recently revealed at the Detroit motor show, and plenty of exciting new features were on show. The highlights for many were the inclusion of turbo charged performance features, new onboard technology, and a ten speed automatic transmission. Let’s take a closer look at some of the details.

First Impressions:

The Accord now has a faster roofline, and the 10th generation looks far sportier than earlier models. There is a longer rear overhang, so the latest Accord will not have the fastback style rear that we’ve seen in the new Civic sedan. There is a striking chrome brow grille and matching side window treatments. The new Accord is lighter, lower, wider and shorter than the outgoing model. This gives the car a more pronounced low to the ground sporty aesthetic, yet it will be one of the more spacious offerings in this segment and the cargo capacity has increased.

In the Cabin:

The new Accord has a new three tier dash design, featuring soft touch materials, a sporty steering wheel, and paddle shifters. A 7″ driving display replaces many of the more traditional information dials. There is also a brand new 8″ infotainment system that provides access to HondaLink connected services, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. The highest specifications will also have a configurable 6″ HUD, to display information, such as speed, engine rpm, traffic sign recognition and navigational information. Some other useful features, are wireless smartphone charging, 4G LTE car WiFi, near field communication technology and over the air updates for the system.

Under the Bonnet:

Many of the most exciting changes have taken place under the bonnet in the new Honda Accord. The old V6 engines have gone, and in their place, there are now turbocharged petrol powerplants and a revised petrol electric hybrid unit for the new sedan.

The non hybrid range starts out with 1.5 litre turbo that generates 143kW of power and 260Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,000 rpm. This engine can be paired with either a six speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The next engine up is a 2.0 litre turbocharged powerplant that replaces the outgoing 3.5 litre V6. This engine can be paired with either a six speed manual or a ten speed automatic transmission. This engine is lower in power at 188kW than the V6, but thanks to the turbocharger there is more torque, up from 339 Nm to 370 Nm.

The final engine is the one used in the Honda Accord Hybrid variant. This is a 2.0 litre Atkinson Cycle petrol unit that is paired with an electric motor. The control systems and batteries have been moved under the floor, and more cargo space is now available. There are no confirmed dates for a Honda Accord Australian release at this time.
