Whether you want clean comedy, outrageous laughter, international stars or the local boy next door, there’s something for everyone. Put them in your diary for this year or next!

Jive Cape Town Funny Festival runs from Monday 11 July to Sunday 7 August this year – that gives you nearly a month to catch some of the best comedy acts both local and international. Fancy seeing Marc Lottering? He’s one of the headliners in this festival’s 19th year, so if you’re in Cape Town, book your tickets for a night of fun and laughter.

Comedy Central International Comedy Festival. 2015 saw the first of what we hope will become an annual event. Held at Silverstar Casino in Joburg, this festival featured some truly big names, from Trevor Noah through to Goliath and Goliath. It wasn’t just a small series of shows either; but a combination of gala concerts at the Globe, as well as late night and open mic sessions at the smaller and more intimate Parker’s Comedy Club, street theatre, and improve comedy at various spots across Silverstar. It’s more like a music festival – you truly become immersed in and live the entire experience.

They really know how to shake things up at 99% Zulu Comedy In its tenth year. 99% Zulu comedy is the country’s biggest, coolest live comedy production, and the only vernacular one. The travelling show has teamed up with Ukhozi FM and can be caught all across the country on varying dates. This year, some of the featured comedians are Sifiso Nene, Siyanda Maphumulo, Siya Seya and Mondli Mzizi. So…if you really love good local talent, this is definitely the place to find them!

If you’re in the Jacaranda city, the Pretoria State Theatre hosts the fortnightly ‘Tshwane Comedy Nights’ which features South Africa’s most talented comedians, from the Goliath brothers to Tats Nkonzo and Craig Caldwell. At only R100 per ticket, we reckon that’s a bargain!

Jozi Comedy is another series of shows that are gaining momentum, though are still lesser known. They really go all out for their regular comedy evenings, featuring the big names; Marc Lottering, Loyiso Gola, John Vlismas, and a variety of others. There’s a good mix of comedians each time, and the venue changes. Often, it’s held in Melrose Arch, Menlyn, or Bedfordview. Sometimes they even do a dinner and comedy show combined. Either way, it’s always a great show and definitely worth a watch!
